Well, I know I have three stories going, but I just need to write them all down, lol. Allow me to rewrite me first version of Ingo, if I may.
Forgot to mention before, but this fan-fic contains spoilers for The Deep.
Chapter 1
Bright sunlight filters into my room and I do not want to open my eyes. I want to stay asleep forever and ever and ever. I want to return to my dream. My dream of speeding through Ingo at the speed of light. I want to feel that exhilarating emotion and I hurtle through the water. That may happen- today.
I force my eyes open. I cannot miss today, even if I have a dream to return to. I jump out of bed, throw my clothes on and run down the hall to Conor's room. He can't miss today either.
Today, we are going to try to surf some of the great current and explore tropical waters- maybe. Mom is away on a business trip and won't be back for a few days. Lucky us. Faro wants me to come to the lost city with him again, but I don't think I could stand to see all those sunken ships and drowned people.
I pound on Conor's door when I get to his room, yell, "Hurry and get up!" and jump down the stairs two at a time. I'm wolfing down my cereal by the time my brother gets to the kitchen.
"Saph," he mutters. "Don't rush. We have lots of time."
"Conor," I say. "We have to get to Ingo as soon as possible so we don't waste too much human time."
Conor shrugs and sits down at the table. He takes some cereal for himself and he eats it agonizingly slow. "I'll leave without you," I threaten.
Conor shrugs again and continues eating. "Hey, Saph. D'you think the others will be there?"
"Sure," I answer. "They wouldn't miss us being beaten by the Great Currents for anything."
We eat in silence for a while. Finally, Conor slurps the last of his milk and gets up from the table. He winks at me on his way by.
We are down at the cove ten minutes later, waiting by the water. It isn't like Faro to be late, but he isn't here yet. Just as I try to stifle a yawn, a head appears, breaking the surface smoothly. It's Isabel. Her long hair billows out in the water around her as she gazes at us with soft, brown eyes.
It's not too hard for Isabel to break the skin. She's like Dad, she crossed over from human to Mer. But she did it of her own free will.
I wade into the water ahead of Conor to greet her. "Hey, Is. Where's the others?"
"Where are," corrects Isabel, that playful Mer glint in her eyes. "They are down below, waiting for you by the reef."
I wonder why they don't come up to the surface to meet us?
"They didn't want to break the skin today," explains Isabel as if she's read my thoughts. "Come on, Saphire. We've been waiting long enough."
I laugh, then turn to Conor. "Hey Con, did yo hear that? They've been waiting for us!"
"Yeah, I hear you," says Conor, wading out to join us.
"Coming?" asks Isabel, the light of Ingo bright in her eyes. A moment later, she is gone and there is only a ripple where she had been moments before.
I beckon eagerly to Conor. Time to go to Ingo! Without a second thought, I plunge beneath the waves and break the skin. The burning around my ribs doesn't last long today. Maybe because I let go of Air thoughts more quicker because of my excitement. And there, they are, waiting for us. Faro, Elvira, Pearl and Emma. Isabel is making her way toward them up ahead.
"Little sister," Faro greets me when I get there. "I was wondering if you had not wanted to ride the Great Currents after all."
Before I can reply, Conor gets there and yells, "Give me five!" to Faro. Delighted, Faro slaps hands with Conor and I can't help but giggle.
Pearl waves her hands impatiently. "Come on. We want to get to the Great Currents so we can surf them by noontime in your human time."
"That fast?" I ask.
"Time is moving slower here in Ingo nowadays," says Isabel to me darkly. "Has something to do with the Tide Knot, I'm sure of it."
A shadow crosses Faro's face. "No more talk of that," he says, then brightens suddenly. "We have currents to ride!" Then he swims away, sending a cloud of bubbles up in his wake.
Conor takes off after him and soon all of us are swimming. Out of us all, only Pearl and Emma are pure Mer. Pearl takes pride in that and rarely talks to Conor and I. She is usually off, swimming ahead or showing off her Mer skills. Emma, however, is more friendly, especially to Isabel and I. She is also quite interested all the time of our human ways.
Now I can tell pure Mer to impure Mer. Pure Mer have a silvery sheen to their bodies and tails while impure Mer lack this trait. I found this out about Faro long ago. But Faro and I never talk about his impureness.
