Chapter 2
The Attack
"Foxes! Foxes" A screech split the air and all the warriors of Coolio jolted awake.
"What? What's going on?" yowled Goldleaf, leaping to her paws.
Flamefire, a pretty ginger she-cat, was already on her way to the entrance of the den, almost tripping over Songheart to get there first. "Foxes? Where?"
Falconstrike was already in the clearing, trying to calm everyone down. In the corner of camp, Pinefoot and Whitediamond were huddled close together, ears flattened. Rainwhisper was speaking with Windsong.
"How far away?" she asked tensely.
"They'll be here in heartbeats," replied Windsong, breathlessly. "As soon as I saw them, I ran back to camp as fast as possible."
Soon, Star emerged from her den, bristling in shock. Heartbeats later, five large foxes burst into the camp snarling, jaws snapping in their blind rampage.
"They're here!" shrieked Windsong in terror.
Songheart bravely lept at one of them, tearing her claws down it's flank and spitting furiously. The other cats of Coolio let out a fearsome battle cry and surged forward. The camp became a whirlwind of screeching and glinting claws.
Windsong lept onto the back of one of the larger foxes. The fox whirled around and fell backward onto the ground, crushing the warrior beneath it. Windsong let out an agonized shriek and let go. Before the fox could turn on her, Rainwhisper snarled in fury and jumped on the fox, digging her claws into it's belly. The fox screamed and writhed beneath the deputy's powerful grip.
Star batted a fox away from her, hissing, but another fox loomed behind her and swiped at her head, catching her between the ears. Star gasped and fell awkwardly to the ground. The foxes growled down at her, teeth glinting.
Rainwhisper was on top of the other huge fox and was just bending down to finish it off, when a huge paw swung at her and hurled off and into one of the camp walls where she lay, stunned. Windsong scrambled to her paws, wincing as she put weight into an injured leg. The two foxes started circling her, growling softly.
Whitediamond pushed the smaller fox off her and got up quickly, looking around. She saw Windsong hopelessly trying to fend of two large foxes. Her eyes widened as she noticed her leader struggling helplessly beneath two other foxes and made up her mind. She rushed at the foxes and pulled one off Star. Star got her footing and swiped mercilessly and the other one.
By now, Songheart, Pinefoot, Falconstrike, Rainwhisper, Flamefire and Windsong were dealing with the other three.
At long last, three of the foxes fled from the camp, yelping as they ran and moments later, the other two followed.
Windsong slumped to the ground and lay there, breathing heavily. Rainwhisper was lying near by with her eyes closed. Songheart, it seemed, wasn't breathing, but after being checked over by Goldleaf, it was confirmed she was still alive. Star was leaning against the wall, panting and Pinefoot was limping over to Whitediamond, Flamefire and Falconstrike to see if they were okay.
Star, although badly injured, lept onto the High Tree and called a meeting. All the cats of Coolio raised their heads and looked at their leader. Whitediamond and Rainwhisper limped over to take their places at the roots.
"Cats of Coolio," began Star. "You have just witnessed and fought in a battle with five foxes. It is clearly a sign that Coolio is not strong enough to fend off what else is out there." She paused as distressed yowls sounded from the cats below.
"That means that the only way we can keep ourselves alive and dominant in this territory is if we get together and gain more members for Coolio.""But," mewed Pinefoot, eyes widening. "How are we going to do that?
I mean, no rogue ever listens to us and even though some consider joining, most never do."Goldleaf nodded, her eyes glinting in distress. "Yes, Pinefoot's right. If what you say is true, it means we're all doomed!"
Panick-stricken yowls answered her words and Star had to yowl at the top of her lungs to make herself heard. "Coolio! Listen to me!
I know all hope seems lost, but we must think of the future of Coolio! If we truly are to survive and become the Clan we once were, we must have faith. In ourselves as well as StarClan. We will get more members."***
Rainwhisper dragged a branch over to the warrior's den. Other warriors were also there, helping. After Star had closed the meeting, the cats of Coolio had got to work increasing the wall of the warriors den while Star had disappeared into her own den.
"Come on, everyone!" called Whitediamond, from nearby, pausing from fitting in some leaves. "We still have lots to do!"
Goldleaf was helping Songheart to roll some huge stones in from the forest and placing them on the outer edge of the den. She flicked her tail at the other warrior and vanished back into the tunnel to find more. Everyone was still quite shaken from the fox attack and no one thought there would be enough defense for their beloved camp. Sooner or later, as Star suspected, they would have to face that
StarClan had destined for more warriors to come to Coolio.(More coming!)
